Happy new year, one and all! Let us hope 2021 brings us an asteroid strike, the Andromeda Strain and The Mule. I’m using reverse psychology, y’see.

Naturally, a new year brings a new chapter in the story of Nancy Brilligan, fearless and slightly mad defender of relativity! Now what could be banging on the ceiling at this hour?

Panel 1 (wide):
Brick Lane, night. It’s dark, it’s wet, windows glimmer solitary in the gloom, and somewhere down the road someone is panicking. A sign advertising GO! LEM is half-hidden in shadow on the side of a building.

DHIRENDRA (off-panel): Turn off the lights!

DHIRENDRA (off-panel): The lights!

Panel 2:
Dhirendra Saha, father figure of the Saha clan, thrusts another broom between the handles of the corner shop door. The door is barely hanging onto its hinges after repeated batterings by an unseen force.

MAHAJ (off-panel): You think that’s enough brooms, tāta?

DHIRENDRA: No, now keep them coming!

Panel 3:
Mahaj, the runt of the family, is rushing to his father with an armful of brooms. The teenage daughter Bhavana has one arm wrapped around her grandmother to keep her safe while holding a useless mobile in the other. The grandmother Chintanika has the calmness of someone who’s been through a lot worse than this.

BHAVANA: Tāta, the phone’s not working! I can’t get through to anyone!

DHIRENDRA: I told you to use mine!

BHAVANA: I am using yours!

Panel 4:
Chintanika opines with a grin on her face as Bhavana hushes her.

CHINTANIKA: Ohooo, this takes me back! I remember in ‘71 when…

BHAVANA: Hush, didā! Listen!

Panel 5:
The Sahas collectively pause and hold their breath.

BHAVANA: ...it’s stopped.
