SI: You being straight with me?

*Doubt

Same view. Nancy freezes, pondering, hesitant, as Si waits.

INTERFACE: *Truth
*Doubt
*Lie

Panel 3 (narrow):
Same view. Nancy has turned and is reaching for her goggles.

NANCY: No, Si, I’m not being straight with you.

NANCY: And I’ll tell you why.

INTERFACE: *Truth (100%)
*Doubt (0%)
*Lie (0%)

Panel 4:
Nancy takes her goggles off, revealing the fuzz underneath.

NANCY: You already know the awful truth at the heart of reality, it’s a precarious rube goldberg machine held together by scotch tape and wishful thinking.

NANCY: If it wasn’t it wouldn’t need me to protect it, would it?

NANCY: Now it’s one thing to hear that in a Brian Cox documentary and go “huh, that’s groovy.” It’s another thing completely to actually perceive it with your feeble simian brain.

Panel 5:
From Nancy’s POV all is white except multiple Sis looking shocked, curious and sceptical at the same time.

NANCY: Best scenario you end up a physical wreck like me in ways that are conveniently good for hitting things, doing x-files detective work and absolutely nothing else.

NANCY: Worst case your brain defragments and you end up a burnt out husk like poor crazy E-D.

Panel 6:
Nancy readjusts her goggles. Si looks a little more understanding.

NANCY: So yeah. I lie. Fib. Obfuscate. Deflect. I don’t give you all the details all the time. I spin a yarn.

NANCY: Because without that connecting narrative tissue, you and your spacey violin powers will either glomp onto some other lunatic’s narrative or blast off into the void, taking all of us with it.

NANCY: I’m looking out for myself here. ‘Sides, I like you and I got a responsibility to your dad to bring you back in one piece.

Panel 7:
Si realises something, cocking her head.

SI: “Narrative tissue?” Issat why ya go on ‘bout London City burgers and stuff? Making up stories so the universe makes sense?

NANCY: Oh no, those are totally real.

NANCY: They just realised the same thing I did and figured “if reality’s that malleable, why not malleable it up in a way that makes me money”?
