Chapter 7 – Page 012
The wood must be echoing with the cracks Young Sam’s rings must be making on the table, those can’t be remotely practical.

Panel 1:
Nancy serves up three cups of tea at the kitchen table. Sam is all smiles while Nancy’s teeth chatter nervously.
NANCY: Heheh…here you go, officers! Never let it be said us younger folk don’t know how to be hospitable and certainly wouldn’t do anything rash or improper heheh…
NANCY: Heheheh!
NANCY: Hahahaha!
NANCY: …heh…
Panel 2:
Sam takes a sip while Saunders probes an extremely rattled Nancy. The tea clatters and spills in Nancy’s grip.
SAUNDERS: You seem nervous about something?
NANCY: N-nervous?! Me?! Oh no no no no no, nothing to be nervous about! I’ve been here all day just “tending the fort” as they say in fortland, hahaha j-just my little joke there, just a…just a joke…
Panel 3:
Nancy rallies something resembling a spine, though it’s still rather tentative. The officers glance at one another.
NANCY: N-now, hang on a minute! I know my rights! It’s a free country, if I want to make my voice heard and speak out against government policy, you can’t persecute me for that! You wanna be poodles to the Washington Neocons and call peaceful protestors terrorists, you’ll have to go through all of us!
NANCY: …sir!
Panel 4:
Sam twigs Nancy was on the march but that’s not why he’s here, and indeed tells her so.
SAM: …as gratifying as it would be to round up half a million contrarian lefties and ship them to the Falklands, that’s not why we’re here.
SAUNDERS: Sarge…
SAM: We’re here about your parents.
Panel 5:
Nancy scowls from the other side of the table.
NANCY: My parents?
NANCY: What could you want with my parents?
NANCY: They’re not even here! Last text I got they were eating bangers and mash in a service station in Coventry, so unless they left without paying for it I don’t see…
Panel 6:
Same view. Nancy’s eyes widen as realisation hits.
NANCY (box): ‘They’d always texted me every step of their journey.’
NANCY (box): ‘And that was the last text they’d sent for hours.’
SAM (off-panel): Right, well…you’re already sitting down so, uh, that’s a good start…
SAM (off-panel): …funny story, in a way.
