This is the warmest relationship Nancy’s going to have with a cop for a very long time to come.

Panel 1:
Sam takes the liberty of switching off the stereo, but is under no illusions he’s at all welcome.

STEREO: ~FAAATHERRRR!
Faaatherrrr!
FAAATH-~

SAM: So when everyone at the graveside noticed the guest of honour had failed to turn up, most of the assembled friends and loved ones were all “well everyone grieves in their own way, best let her be, she’ll come around”.

NANCY: goffffyersel’...

Panel 2:
Same view. Nancy lobs a copy of The Sandman that bounces harmlessly off Sam’s chest. He doesn’t even flinch. He’s seen worse.

SAM: But I know a cry for help when I see one.

NANCY: ngh!

NANCY: nggghhnnngh!

SAM: I asked around. You hadn’t invited any of your schoolmates and no one there seemed to know you on a first-name basis.

Panel 3:
Sam sits on the bed next to Nancy, getting near her level.

SAM: What’s your plan for tomorrow? Disappear off the face of the earth?

NANCY: I dunno…

NANCY: …ain’t got no grandparents. Closest relative’s Aunt Doris and she’s in Australia.

Panel 4:
Sam scratches his chin. He’s nervous about broaching the subject.

SAM: Okay. Well…

SAM: …spur of the moment, I realise, but…Audrey and I have always wanted a kid, and…

Panel 5:
In the time we take to turn back to Nancy, her eyes have turned to water and Sam is getting concerned they might be jumping the gun.

SAM: …and you don’t have to answer right away, there’s all the paperwork to sort out and safeguarding courses to clear, I wouldn’t want you to jump into a situation feet-first while you’re still emotionally compromised-

Panel 6:
Same view. Nancy immediately and without a second’s pause violently hugs Sam with all her might. Sam squirms a little at the suddenness.

SAM: O-hokay! I see a moment of reflection is not currently on the cards.

SAM: I’ll…uh…get the forms in, then, I guess.

SI (box): ‘Right, I’m dead curious now. Sam Wording as a dad, how’d that work?’
