For an avatar of quantum devastation, you’re remarkably unobservant, Carol.

Panel 1:
In the present, Lewis’ eyes flitter to the lamppost, visibly concerned.

LEWIS: Not a day goes by when I wish I could yank that ache out and stamp on it.

LEWIS: But I can’t.

LEWIS: So all I can do is try to make sure the people I care about don’t get strangled by it.

Panel 2 (thin horizontal):
We only see Lewis’ pleading, desperate eyes.

LEWIS: And that means you.

LEWIS: Running away.

LEWIS: Right now.

Panel 3 (thin horizontal):
We only see Sam’s squinting, flint, untrusting eyes.

LEWIS: …please.

Panel 4:
Lewis takes the hint and slowly backs off, gun trained on Lewis the whole way.

Panel 5:
Same view. Sam dashes behind a bin. Lewis, relieved, holsters his gun. Behind him, Carol is emerging from the lamppost.

Panel 6:
Same view. Sam has disappeared, and Lewis turns to greet Carol with affected irritation. Carol is nursing a red mark on her face but appears otherwise all business.

LEWIS: Well don’t you look flush.

LEWIS: You recall there are public ordinances against recreation on duty?

CAROL: I’m a civil servant, not a cop, liquid lunches are part of the territory.

CAROL: Besides, I didn’t touch a drop.

Panel 7:
Sam huddles behind a corner, listening in intently.

LEWIS (off-panel): So why-?

LEWIS (off-panel): Did someone slap you?!

CAROL (off-panel): Oh don’t worry, what I did to her was way worse.

CAROL (off-panel): Radio the Scots, there’s some transport disruption we need to arrange.
